Tips on Brewing Great Coffee

A great cup of coffee, whatever method you use to brew it, requires freshly roasted coffee beans, good water and a few simple tips.

There are many different ways to prepare coffee. We feel that the plunger pot or "French press" allows our organic beans to express themselves the best. Plunger pots do not remove the oils from the coffee. The oils contain much of the flavor. However, whatever method you use to prepare coffee at home, these few simple steps will help you serve a better brew.

First, remember that most of what goes into the mix is water. Cool, fresh water is a must. If the water has an unpleasant taste, or if you aren't confident in the source, using a water filter will improve it greatly. A second option is distilled water from your local supermarket. In the gallon size it's quite inexpensive.

Secondly, you must have high quality, freshly roasted coffee beans. Time and exposure to air will slowly, but steadily dissipate the oils in the bean. Remember, the beans flavor is, to a great degree, in those oils. Buy coffee beans that appeal to your palate and keep them in an airtight container. It's still being argued whether room temperature, refrigeration or freezing is the best for storage. Most people recommend room temperature.

The final step is to grind the coffee just prior to brewing. Choose a grind that is suited to your type of brewing. If you decide to use a plunger pot, a medium grind is best. Any type of drip pot will also need a medium grind. Any system using a cone filter benefits from a fine grind while percolators need a course grind.

Following these few simple steps will provide you with a very satisfying cup of coffee.

Enjoy!
